A Quick, Half-Assed Rationalization for Writing About TV

I’ve made a half-hearted attempt to maintain a sister blog of television reviews and commentary, but, as “half-hearted” would imply, my efforts have been…wait for it…half-hearted.

Partially this is because I’m remarkably lazy.  Partially it’s because I find it deeply shameful that my life can be so empty at times that I’ve nothing to write about other than that I’m watching on television.  Perhaps more significantly, It’s also partially because I think television criticism is the work of parasites feeding upon the hard work of genuine artists, and then also partially because I don’t think I’m very good at it.Mind you, we’re in an age of television (actually a golden age, in my opinion) where so much of what is produced is done so with an intent and artistry that almost requires one to see entire runs of seasons, if not series, in order to have enough of a perspective to comment coherently.  In fact, in some cases, I think it might even be necessary for there to be a sufficient passage of time before one should comment if one wants to be anything other than a gambler or do anything other than guess about the significance of something.

But there’s the rub, really.  I’m simply not a good enough analyst to take full advantage however long I choose to wait.  The best I can do is offer some comments in the moment, with the full understanding that what I have to say is of little worth and almost certainly lacking in sufficient perspective.

But I’m going to keep doing it anyway, because I do love television and enjoy dishing a little bit about what I see.  Plus, it makes me feel a little better about all the time “wasted.”  If I had any readers, their input via the comments might also be meritous, too.  What’s needed, I think, is just not to be too high-fallutin’ about anything.  I’m no Alan Sepinwall, but maybe I’ll get better over time.
